It always came back to darkness. Years later, when my memories came back to haunt me, there was always the darkness. Most of the time it just hovered out of sight, an elusive pressure on my mind, but occasionally it made itself known, souring my mood and spreading throughout my body. The blackest tendrils of fear, they wound themselves around me, suffocating and overwhelming. I was never conscious for long when the darkness came back.
